Using visual displays and projectors

A stunning set and the right special effects can do wonders in terms of enhancing your theatre performance. Advances in theatre technology have opened the door to making all manner of previously impossible landscapes and effects come to life. Digital projectors and cycloramas, as well as using visual displays and projectors, allow for dynamic ‘real time’ set and background changes that compliment all kinds of theatre performances.

Video and digital projectors are becoming a popular alternative to traditionally built sets. Digital projection is more manageable and cost-effective than physical sets. By using ‘state of the art’ equipment and techniques, you can incorporate depth and movement into productions, and elements of film and animation can be utilised to add further meaning and narrative to a production. The scope of uses for digital projectors is limited only by your imagination.

If you are planning on using digital projection in your venue, or for a specific production, keep in mind you will also need a cyclorama or ‘cyc’. This is a large concave wall or stage curtain which forms the background to the stage by partially encircling it.  Cycloramas are available in a range of materials that include filled scrim, muslin and canvas. These are great pieces of equipment that can be used alongside video projectors. A good lighting designer can even achieve many effects using lighting alone.

Preparation is paramount for any successful production and there are a variety of digital projectors and cycloramas on the market for a range of budgets. You will need to consider factors like whether a wall mounted or ceiling mounted projector is going to be the most suitable. Cycloramas are also available in different materials, sizes and styles. Carefully consider what equipment will be most appropriate for your venue.

It’s a good idea to consult a specialist who can install these solutions safely, effectively and in a timely manner.
