Specialty Group Pty Ltd is proud to announce that its Specialty Theatre division has provided theatre fabric and stage curtains to the spectacular ‘Grace Kelly: Style icon’ exhibition at the Bendigo Art Gallery.  The exhibition was opened by Her Serene Highness, Princess Charlene of Monaco on 10 March, 2012.

‘Grace Kelly: Style Icon’ traces the fairytale story of Grace Kelly – a girl from Philadelphia who became a Hollywood star before meeting her prince and becoming a Princess of Monaco. It features costumes from films, including High Society and Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window; iconic designer gowns, including the one she wore to accept her Oscar in 1955; and accessories such as the famous Hermès ‘Kelly’ bag, designed especially for the Princess.

Specialty Theatre supplied custom-coloured plush velvet theatre fabric and manufactured it into wall curtains that guided patrons around the exhibition.  Not only did the wall drapes provide a unique setting for this unique fashion exhibition, but they also acted as excellent acoustic curtains to manage sound in the popular venue.

The Honourable Ted Baillieu, Premier and Minister for the Arts in the State of Victoria stated “There has been enormous public interest in this spectacular exhibition.  It has been to Monaco, Rome, New York and London, but the only place in Australia that you can see it is Bendigo.  “Including pre-sales, 26,000 tickets have already been sold, which is a remarkable figure for any gallery in Australia, regional or metropolitan”, said Mr Baillieu.

The exhibition runs from 11 March, 2012 to 17 June, 2012 at the gallery’s space in View Street, Bendigo.  The exhibition has been curated in conjunction with the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Grimaldi Foundation in Monaco.  The exhibition will not be displayed anywhere else in Australia.

“We are very excited to to be involved with ‘Grace Kelly: Style Icon’ and the Bendigo Art Gallery”, said Jim Dodd, Sales Executive at Specialty Theatre Supplies.  “This and other fashion exhibitions have made Bendigo Art Gallery the pre-eminent regional gallery in Australia.  The Grace Kelly exhibition is the latest in a series of spectacular successes including ‘The Golden Age of Couture’ in 2009 and ‘200 Years of Wedding Fashion’ in 2011.”

Sandra Bruce, the Gallery’s Collections Manager, explained that the plush velvet stage drapes “complemented the exhibition and gave a great sense of expectation to people as they entered the show”.  Sandra Bruce fully expects that this will be yet another blockbuster fashion exhibition for the gallery.

Specialty Theatre worked closely with Fitzroy based, Design Office Australia Pty Ltd on the assignment.
