Theatre and Stage Curtains
Specialty Theatre manufactures and installs all types of stage drapes and theatre curtains from the front of house curtains (FOHC) to the on-stage technical stage curtains, including borders, valances, legs, backdrops, cycloramas, and other special effect screens. We even make reproductions of historic curtains.
We make and install stage curtains and theatre drapes for opera houses, performing arts centres, concert halls, theatres, school multipurpose rooms and churches.
The material we use is sourced from Australia and around the world. It is flame retardant to meet Australian standards.
Our range would not be complete without our own revolutionary theatre track and runner system with motorized or manual operation ensuring low maintenance and long service life.
Front-of-House Curtain
The front-of-house curtain has several “stage names,” if you’ll pardon the play on words. Also known as the house curtain, act curtain, grand drape, main drape, or even the main rag, this is the large curtain at the very front of the stage. As versatile as they are attractive, front-of-house curtains can be drawn in a variety of ways, including traveller, wipe, Venetian and Tableau.
Teasers & Tormentors
The proscenium opening or arch is part of the base building architecture and therefore has fixed proportions that can’t easily be changed. Teasers and tormentors are stage curtains, sometimes fixed and sometimes movable, that are placed immediately upstage of the proscenium arch to reduce or reshape the size of the opening.
Acoustic Curtains
Acoustic curtains are generally made of heavy duty, flame retardant fabrics, specially designed and constructed to absorb sound. They can be used with various track systems to afford greater flexibility than fixed sound absorptive panels.
Legs, Borders & Tabs
Legs and borders are technical theatre drapes that are used to give depth to the stage and sometimes to mask stage equipment. While legs and borders generally serve the same purpose as tormentors and teasers, there are usually several sets of legs and borders placed at varying distances from the proscenium that make up the standard curtain package.
Masking Curtains
As the name suggests, masking curtains are theatrical drapes that mask or hide objects and block light. This makes them effective for everything from creating the relevant mood in the theatre, to making it easier to quickly change sets.
Valance Curtain
A beautiful, well made valance can add a touch of class and elegance to any theatre. The valance is the short, horizontal stage curtain, which is traditionally fixed to the main front-of-house curtain. Normally made from the same material as the front-of-house curtain, the valance curtain frames the stage, giving definition to the viewing area, creating a border that creates the same kind of effect as a cinema screen, only far more glamorous.
Cyclorama or "cyc"
A cyclorama is a large stage curtain or wall, often concave, positioned at the back of the stage area. Used for projection or lighting purposes and still relatively new to the theatre world, cycloramas have added a whole new dimension to artistic expression on stage.
Backdrop Curtains
Backdrop curtains are large seamless theatrical curtains that hang at the back of the stage. Typically made of cotton, backdrop curtains can be painted to provide extra stage scenery, or shield performers until curtain time.
Stage Gauze & Scrims
Gauzes or scrims are stage curtains used to provide useful, often dramatic and moody theatrical effects. They are made from open weave fabrics, so the term gauze is quite appropriate.
Church Curtains
Church curtains and drapes are one of our specialties. Specialty Theatre have supplied quality curtains, lighting and audiovisual equipment to churches and other houses of worship all across Australia for over 40 years.
Room Divider Curtains
A thick fabric curtain can be a very cost-effective and efficient way to divide a large room such as a multipurpose room, gymnasium, or auditorium. Curtains are movable allowing for a room to be used as one large hall or potentially several smaller ones.
